The recipient of the 2020 Emma L. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship is Kayla Maxile from Garner Magnet High School.
An excerpt from Kayla’s essay: "Numerous times this summer I found myself doing something beyond connecting with people, and that was empathizing with them. I think that empathy is a very important attribute to consider when working with individuals, especially children. It is hard to complete a task with another person if you don't understand where they might be coming from, and understanding what is going on and how it might make them feel is relevant to achieving success..."
