An excerpt from Malia’s essay: "Being a person of color already generates its own set of low expectations from society. Stereotypes spread the belief that children of color often struggle in school, and tend to have trouble avoiding criminal behavior. Being a CIP of color only lowers the already low expectations certain outsiders may have of my academic ability. Not only do people often assume that I won't excel academically, but many outsiders also believe that I'll end up taking a similar path as my parents..."
